5 Secrets to Keeping Blonde Hair, Blonde

Often, I get asked, “Kiara, how do you keep your blonde hair… well, blonde?”. That particular question raises a thousand different follow-up questions. Throughout my years as a blonde, I’ve put together the ultimate formula to a color-treated heads dream. So here it is:

1 kick a** colorist + an even better purple conditioner = golden hair heaven

Blonde Hair Tip #1—Patience is a Virtue

Transitioning from dark to blonde hair can be a lengthy process. This requires bleaching and toning of the hair, which will need multiple follow-up appointments to achieve the desired color level—depending on the natural base of the hair. This is why it is essential to final a professional colorist you not only feel comfortable with, but also understands the process of hair lightening. Remember we are playing around with BLEACH. A professional will recommend gradually lightening your hair over time in order to help maintain the integrity of your strands. You’ll be happy you waited!
Bonus Tip: Try bringing in photos to show your colorist, this will allow them to get a better idea of your desired color level and help build a strong base.

Blonde Hair Tip #2—Choose the Shampoo or Conditioner that works for you!

If you have to choose between buying a purple shampoo or purple conditioner, spend the $$$ on the conditioner. I recommend ELEVEN Australia ‘Keep My Colour Treatment Blonde’ and Kevin Murphy ‘Cool.Agent’. While the Colour Treatment hydrates the hair and boosts blonde tones, the Cool.Agent enhances shine. I typically apply these two treatments onto my hair and let the concoction do its work for 15 minutes being rinsing.

Although I do use a purple shampoo, I always stick with the Eleven Australia products, my preference -> ‘Keep My Colour Blonde Shampoo’. To avoid brassiness in your hair’s blonde, white or silver tones, use purple-tinted products once or twice a week.

Highly recommended leave-in times!
Warm Blondes: Wait 1-3 minutes before rinsing
Neutral Blondes: Wait 3-5 minutes before rinsing
Cool Blondes: Wait 5-15 minutes before rinsing

Keep in mind that purple shampoo does not replace your regular shampoo and should only be used once or twice a week.

Blonde Hair Tip #3—Hydration is your friend

If you’re not a natural blonde, welcome to the damaged and extremely thirsty hair club. We’ve all been there before. Keep the hair hydrated by nourishing it weekly with leave-in treatments. After washing my hair, I like to leave in a deep conditioner mask for 30-45 minutes outside of the shower (let’s save the environment together, guys). Afterwards, I rinse out the treatment and create my own little “smoothie” of hair serums and hydrating agents to leave in while my hair dries.

Blonde Hair Tip #4—Heat is not your friend.

Hot tools are especially threatening to color-treated blonde hair. Minimize the damage with heat-protection tools and serums—and don’t forget to lower the temperature on your curling irons, straighteners, blow dryers, etc. Hats and scarves are the best immediate defense, but if hair is going to be in direct sunlight, use products with UV filters.

Blonde Hair Tip #5—Make your color last

Refresh your color in-between services. Visiting the salon 4-6 weeks for hair gloss treatments are totally recommended. Hair gloss is semi-permanent chemical treatment that adds shine and deep luster to hair, restores color, tones and keeps away frizz. The main goal of the treatment is to make sure your hair becomes insulated to chemicals that might want to damage it

**This review was not paid for. I really love the products that I use on my hair and wanted to showcase my personal experience. I would and will never promote a product I have not used on myself or would recommend to others.
